It was a promising performance from the Catamounts, who fared better in this game than they did against any other high major team on this years schedule.
UVM lost 80-58 to Providence and 68-50 against South Carolina earlier in the year.
Vermont got 14 points and 10 rebounds from Drew Urquhart, who started in the place of the injured Payton Henson. They also got 14 points from junior guard Trae Bell-Haynes.
UVM held its own on the glass and only turned the ball over nine times, but if you want to pull an upset on the road against a team of Butler’s caliber, you have to shoot well from the outside and Vermont couldn’t do it. They were just 3-12 from behind-the-arc.
UVM will take on Siena next on Dec. 29 before playing Harvard on Jan. 2.
