Bryce Harper Wants $400 Million Extension?

I want to just roll my eyes at this, but I’m not so sure I can…

The article says that the Nationals are not in line with that monetary figure and could let Harper walk after 2018 when he becomes a free agent. And that makes sense for the Nationals to say considering Harper hit just .243 a season ago with 24 home runs and 86 RBIs.

But, as the article points out, Alex Rodriguez signed a $250 million deal in 2001 – so is it crazy to see the top contract not even increase two times what it was 15 years ago when the game is much better off financially?

Also, Harper is only going to be 26 when he hits free agency. Maybe it’s worth that price to have the face of your franchise for another decade and know that he’ll drive ticket prices and merchandise sales, and be in the prime of his career.
