Raiders Now Own Top Spot in the AFC

There is something brewing in Oakland, people — and that could be a problem for Patriots fans here in New England.

With a win last night on Monday Night Football, the Raiders are now in possession of the top spot in the AFC, narrowly edging the Patriots.

Both teams are 8-2, so why, right now, do the Raiders have the inside track at homefield advantage in the playoffs?

The Raiders have the best “win percentage in common games” between the two teams. Basically both teams have beaten the Texans, so that’s a wash, but the Patriots lost to the Bills, another common opponent. The Raiders also beat Denver, another common opponent. But the Raiders haven’t played the Bills yet and the Pats haven’t played Denver so it doesn’t really matter.

What does matter is that the Raiders have a young quarterback, two good receivers and a pass rush which could make life tough for the Patriots if they met in January.
