76ers Deny Anthem Singer in ‘We Matter’ Jersey

Last night, the Philadelphia 76ers opened up their season against the Oklahoma City Thunder and they did so with a bit of a change in the pre-game lineup.

Singer Sevyn Streeter was supposed to sing the Anthem but was told she couldn’t, and she says it’s because she was wearing a jersey that said “We Matter.”

The 76ers put out this statement after the game, which we take via ESPN:

“The Philadelphia 76ers organization encourages meaningful actions to drive social change. We use our games to bring people together, to build trust and to strengthen our communities. As we move from symbolic gestures to action, we will continue to leverage our platform to positively impact our community,” the Sixers said in a statement.

I have to say that I agree with the 76ers stance. While I fully support people’s right to combat social issues, practices like this are things that drive division in this country. It creates sides, and the people fighting are fighting for sides to be eliminated.
